Self-employed & owner-only

SEP IRA

A Simplified Employee Pension. Only the employer contributes — up to 25% of compensation (or 20% of net self-employment income) per participant. Minimal paperwork, tax-deductible contributions, and ideal for solo entrepreneurs and very small teams.

Owner-only (spouse OK)

Solo 401(k)

Built for self-employed business owners with no full-time employees. You contribute as both employee and employer — allowing significantly higher annual contributions than a SEP. Traditional and Roth options, with loan provisions available on many plans.
